How to correctly double seal a bath or shower to ensure no unwanted leaks
Why do baths and showers leak even though there is a silicon seal?
We are called out to many houses that have water damage that has been created by the bath or shower. More often than not the reason is because only one seal exists between the bath or shower unit and the wall. No matter how many times you reapply a silicon seal, water will still find its way to the tiles and then down the wall. Ultimately left long enough the floor will be damaged.
How should a bath or shower be sealed at the wall?
When a bath or shower is fitted in a bathroom, the bath or shower unit should be placed against the wall prior to it being tiled and then a silicon seal placed between the unit and the wall.
The walls can then be tiled with the tile overlapping the bath or shower unit. The tile running around the edge of the bath or shower unit should then be silicon sealed. This creates a double seal, first at the wall and second against the tile.
If the double seal technique is carried out correctly, you will not have any water leaks from this area of your bath or shower.
Do not let your bathroom fitter use any other method other than the double seal method. Keep your bathroom free from unwanted water leaks.

Prepare Bathroom Walls For Tiling The Boarding Method
When we refit a bathroom, one of the first tasks we carry out is the removal of the bathroom suit and the wall tiles. When the tiles are removed the plaster behind comes away with the tile. It is not possible to remove wall tiles without some plaster also being removed.
To prepare the walls for tiling, the best solution is to board the walls as this will give a flat wall surface and allow for the tiling to be carried out within hours.
We are often asked if we will plaster the walls to prepare them for tiling. Plastering the wall will not ensure the wall is flat, it will only ensure the wall is smooth. To ensure that the tiling will look perfect, a flat wall is required.
Do not tile on top of old Tiles!
We have heard of bathroom fitters that suggest that it is best to fit the new tiles on top of the existing tiles. This is not accurate and we strongly recommend that all existing tiles are removed and walls boarded in preparation of the new tiles.
